Strings Division
Who are we?
Rooted in the Western Art Music tradition, the current Strings division at the Stellenbosch University Music Department builds on the foundations laid by educators such as Paul Martens, Jack de Wet, Eric Rycroft, Dalena Roux, Lona Antoniadis and Louis van der Watt, amongst others. Boasting a strong tradition of training in the fields of solo performance, chamber music, orchestral playing and teaching, our alumni have made their mark as teachers, chamber musicians and orchestral players, nationally as well as internationally. Employability is our mission – we aim to equip students to enter the professional music world as versatile, well-rounded string players and teachers.
The strings curriculum includes participation in USSO (Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra), Teaching Methods and Repertoire Studies, as well as Chamber Music. Practical specialisation options include Solo and Chamber Music. Orchestral Studies, currently offered as a non-specialising module, will soon become a specialisation choice.
Our strings students benefit greatly from the annual Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival, where they are exposed to a largely international playing and teaching faculty. The festival provides excellent networking opportunities, not only with peers but also with national and international soloists and teachers.
More advanced students have the opportunity to gain experience in chamber orchestra playing by participating in the activities of the Stellenbosch Camerata and other SU String Ensemble activities. Students are encouraged to explore as many chamber group formations as possible, with our award-winning SU String Quartet being just one example.
