Voice Division

Who are we?

The Voice Division at Stellenbosch University is deeply committed to the holistic development of each student, nurturing individuality while guiding singers to discover and refine their unique artistic voice through vocal pedagogy of the highest standard. The Voice faculty consists of highly skilled pedagogues who remain active as performing artists, adjudicators, researchers and conductors, ensuring that teaching is continually informed by current professional practice.

Students are immersed in a rich and diverse musical environment, gaining experience across a wide range of genres, including opera, oratorio, art song, musical theatre, and jazz. The programme places strong emphasis on performance through linguistic and stylistic proficiency, equipping singers with solid vocal diction skills in Italian, French, and German.

Practical training is further enriched through an integrated approach to performance practice, incorporating disciplines such as acting, movement, text interpretation, and stagecraft. Such interdisciplinary engagement reflects international best practice in opera and vocal training, where the development of the singer as a complete performing artist is paramount. Students are encouraged to cultivate physical awareness, dramatic integrity, and interpretative depth alongside vocal technique. Ensemble work constitutes a central component of this training, fostering collaborative musicianship, stylistic versatility, and professional adaptability. Through participation in small and large ensembles, staged productions, and workshop environments, singers develop essential skills in communication, responsiveness, and artistic cohesion. These competencies are fundamental to sustained success within contemporary performance contexts.

Teaching Methods modules further equip students with valuable pedagogical skills, providing them with the knowledge and practical tools to teach voice with confidence and competence. A particular focus is placed on the performance and promotion of South African compositions, celebrating repertoire that reflects the richness of all the country’s official languages, fostering both artistic excellence and cultural relevance.

Beyond the department, students regularly achieve success on prominent platforms, performing at festivals, competitions, and masterclasses, as well as collaborating with leading orchestras in South Africa, reflecting the division’s commitment to professional excellence and real-world experience.

Projects

The Division creates regular performance opportunities for singers to participate in, including performance classes, studio concerts, masterclasses as well as the yearly Vocal Ensemble showcase.

In addition to that we have an annual collaboration project between SU Voice Division and Opera UCT. This project is in its 6th year and brings students of Stellenbosch and Cape Town Universities together to create innovative projects through the genre of art song. The emphasize is always on the collaborative aspect where the students work together to bring the project to life. This not only fosters healthy relations between the two institutions but also allow collegial bonds and networks to grow between young singers and musicians.
