Department of Music

Stellenbosch University’s Department of Music is the oldest institution of its kind in South Africa and boasts a proud tradition that spans more than one hundred years of dedication to music education, the performing arts, creative work and research.  With a long-standing tradition of artistic and academic achievement, our alumni excel in their careers, shaping the South African and international music landscapes. We combine innovative teaching methods with diverse, comprehensive programmes to create an inspiring environment where students confidently refine their craft, explore new musical horizons, and pursue their artistic aspirations.

Originally founded in 1905 as the South African Conservatorium of Music by visionary musicians, our department carries forward a rich legacy of creative excellence. Since integrating into the university in 1934, the department has continually evolved, expanding its offerings to include comprehensive education, performance and research initiatives. Today, the department is housed in the state-of-the-art Konservatorium building, nurturing a vibrant creative community, unmatched in the South African landscape for the scope of opportunities and exposure afforded to students.

The departmental ethos celebrates and engages critically with tradition, while fostering innovation to remain at the forefront of music developments.

The courses are designed for those with little or no access to formal music tuition who wish to upgrade their music literacy skills in order to advance the community music organisations with which they are involved or those who intend to continue with tertiary music studies.
