Orchestral Practice & Ensemble Performance Division
Who are we?
The Department of Music, Stellenbosch University offers a comprehensive ensemble programme where students can participate in the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra (USSO), Symphonic Wind Band (USSWE), Jazz Band (SUJB), Maties Jazz Orchestra (MJO), and the African Music Ensemble (AMU, Conquering Spirits), as well as Woodwind, Brass, String, and Recorder Ensembles. In addition, there are smaller specialised chamber groups such as the Stellenbosch University Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, String Quartet, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Quartet, Maties Jazz Society, and more.
The Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra, reintroduced into the Department in 2023 after a hiatus of several years, provides a developmental platform for young musicians and creates mentorship opportunities for tertiary students.
Students enrolled in the credit-bearing module Orchestral Practice participate in one or more of the larger ensembles, which emphasises experiential learning as a core component of undergraduate practical orchestral training. Weekly sectional and tutti rehearsals, and selected concerts led by Department staff, provide an opportunity for students to refine technical skills, develop ensemble awareness, and experience diverse conducting approaches.
USSO, USSWE and SUJB members are privileged to perform under the baton of international guest conductors, some of whom hold extraordinary appointments within the Department, providing students with access to global musical perspectives through performances in the Endler Concert Series. Emerging young South African conductors are also afforded the opportunity to conduct the orchestras, and these collaborations—together with high-calibre soloists who perform regularly with the orchestra, wind band and jazz ensembles—enrich the learning environment and students’ performance experiences.
In support of the University’s commitment to social impact, several concerts prioritise audience development, ensuring that youth from diverse backgrounds can access live performances in the Endler Hall. These initiatives promote cultural inclusion and social cohesion while enabling students to engage meaningfully with the broader community.
