Bachelor of Agriculture Honours in Agri-business Management

The Bachelor of Agriculture Honours in Agri-business Management is designed to equip prospective expert agricultural managers and agricultural economists with high level skills in the use of agricultural economics and agricultural management techniques, including the analysis of the limitations and potential of the agricultural sector. After the successful completion of the programme you will be able to analyse more complex problem situations and to create more sophisticated farming or agribusiness systems and/or make sophisticated agricultural policy recommendations. This expertise is necessary in order to ensure the international competitiveness of South African agriculture and related industries, and also to enable South Africa to play its rightful role in the agricultural sector in Africa.

Agricultural Economics forms the central component of the programme. The programme focuses on the management of agriculture-related enterprises.

Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Plant Physiology

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Plant Physiology is designed to strengthen your knowledge and competencies in the discipline of Horticultural Science, with emphasis on plant physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms, which is relevant to production and quality systems within horticultural crops.

You will also be equipped in research methodology, whilst your writing and presentation skills will also be developed. These skills will enable you to apply for further postgraduate studies offered in Horticulture (MScAgric).

Bachelor of Science Honours in Plant Pathology

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Plant Pathology consists of further specialised study in Plant Pathology. The modules and study tasks add greater depth of learning, building further on a bachelor’s programme with Microbiology, Genetics, Botany or Biotechnology as major subject. The programme is research and career oriented and is based on modern technology and the most recently available research in Plant Pathology. It links up with research projects carried out in the Department.

Bachelor of Science Honours in Wine Biotechnology

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Wine Biotechnology consists of further study in one of the majors for the degree BScAgric, BSc or BEng; supplementary study is sometimes required. The modules and study assignments add depth to the study and form a continuation of the bachelor’s programme. The programme is research and career-oriented and is based on modern technology and the most recently available research in the field of wine production systems.

The programme comprises formal lectures, as well as seminars, self-study and experimental work in Wine Biotechnology. The following topics are covered:
• genetic properties and improvement of wine yeasts;
• grape-based beverages;
• alcoholic fermentation;
• chemical compounds of grapes and wine;
• techniques in wine and grapevine biotechnology;
• malolactic fermentation and microbial spoilage;
• enzymes in preparation of wine;
• grapevine structure and functions; and
• grapevine biology, biotechnology and improvement.

You must carry out self-study on the South African wine industry as well as independent research in grapevine and wine biotechnology.

Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics

The Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics focuses strongly on research and is designed to develop high-level skills in the use of Agricultural Economic and Agricultural Management techniques, including the analysis of the limitations and potential of the agricultural sector, in students who wish to become agricultural economists or management experts in the private or public sector. This expertise is necessary to ensure the international competitiveness of South African agricultural and related industries, and to enable South Africa to play its rightful role in the development of the agricultural sector in Africa. The Bachelor of Arts Honours in African Languages focuses on the development of a reflective language view of the African languages through
the study of literature and/or linguistics.

Four specialisation fields or streams are offered in the programme:
• Language teaching;
• Communication;
• Literature; and
• Linguistics.

The programme is presented by means of 2 lectures and 1 seminar per week.

Bachelor of Arts Honours in Afrikaans and Dutch

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Afrikaans and Dutch consists of a compulsory research assignment and six electives chosen from a variety of modules. You choose six modules in linguistics or literature in order to prepare yourself for a career in teaching Afrikaans, a career requiring advanced knowledge of Afrikaans language studies, or a career requiring advance knowledge of Afrikaans and/or Dutch literature.

Not all modules are necessarily available for selection in all years. This programme is presented in lecture format.

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Ancient Languages consists of coursework and an assignment that broadens your knowledge of one of the ancient languages, namely Biblical Hebrew, Greek or Latin.

Specialisation is possible in:

Bachelor of Arts Honours in Chinese

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Chinese is a one-year programme presented in Chinese and designed to deepen students' knowledge of Chinese language and culture.

In order to achieve the goal, the programme requires that students spend one semester at Renmin University in Beijing, China. Bursaries and scholarships are made available by the Chinese Government for further studies in China.

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in English Studies programme consists of eight taught elective seminars spread over the first three terms and one long research essay spread across the year and completed in the class-free fourth term.

Each taught component meets for a weekly two-hour seminar over six weeks. These courses cover a wide range of texts and topics related to the Department's research foci.

Bachelor of Arts Honours in French

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in French coursework programme is presented in French and is designed to diversify and to deepen students' knowledge of French literature and to further the acquisition of relevant research methodology.

Themes include myth and modernity, literature and society, gender and film studies. An introductory module in translation equips students to use French as a professional tool whereas regular seminars develop a variety of competencies, such as stylistics and phonetics. Bursaries are made available by the French Government for further studies and/or training in France.

Bachelor of Arts Honours in General Linguistics

The Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Mathematical Statistics: Focal Area in Data Science program is presented jointly by the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Department of Computer Science. Consequently students have to be admitted to postgraduate study by both these departments. A bachelor’s degree with an average mark of at least 65% in Mathematical Statistics 3 is required, together with a satisfactory mark of at least 65% in Computer Science up to at least second year level.

The Master of Education in Educational Support serves as requirement for registration as psychologist (in the category Educational Psychology) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

The Board for Psychology of the HPCSA has implemented revised requirements for the educational psychology programme. To comply with these changes, we have incorporated a full one-year internship into the curriculum, which has implications for the minimum duration of the programme. You will be required to complete the entire coursework component of the programme and obtain faculty approval for your research proposal before commencing the internship. The internship and research components of the programme can be completed concurrently within the same academic year.

Master of Laws

The curriculum for the general Master of Laws by coursework is not formally organised by department, and there is no uniform set of prescribed modules. Instead, students are invited to compile a curriculum from modules offered by the Faculty. Selections must meet the formal degree requirements and are subject to approval by the Faculty Board. The timetable also restricts the options available to the student, which is inevitable. While the timetable leaves room for inter-disciplinary choices, it permits student specialisation by the selection of modules within the broad areas of either Private, Mercantile, or Public Law. Take note that the degree certificate for the general LLM by coursework does not reflect an area of specialisation. A research paper must be completed in addition to the modules.

It consists of a theoretical and a practical component which will not only enable you to be involved in training, but will also equip you with a thorough knowledge on the use of human tissue for research purposes.

Bachelor of Science Honours in Biokinetics

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Biokinetics has been granted professional accreditation by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) until (and including) 2028. Students who wish to apply for HPCSA registration as professional biokineticists must therefore complete the current programme by the end of 2028 academic year. The Faculty is in the process of designing a new professional bachelor’s degree programme, which will potentially replace this programme. As soon as this has been confirmed, students will be informed of the phasing-out plan for this Honours programme. Should the Faculty decide to retain the Honours programme indefinitely, a re-accreditation will be scheduled with HPCSA.
