Students condemn Nazi propaganda on campus
Several students at Stellenbosch University (SU) strongly condemned the spread of "Nazi" propaganda, racial polarisation and racial superiority on campus on Thursday (11 May 2017).
During a mass meeting on the Rooiplein at the Stellenbosch campus, they spoke out strongly against those who put up "Nazi posters" on campus earlier this week. The event was organised by, among others, the Student Representative Council and DASO Maties
Speakers representing student organisations as well as audience members expressed their views on the situation. Some were strongly opposed to forms of continued racism on campus, while others criticised SU for the way it handled the matter saying the University did not do enough to prevent such incidents. Another group called for unity among different racial groups on campus.
Also present at the event was Mr Jaco Greeff Brink of SU's Equality Unit and the Dean of Students Ms Tonia Overmeyer who, in solidarity with the students, reiterated that SU is a place of inclusivity where racism should not be tolerated.
One of the students implicated in the distribution of the posters was also part of the audience. He asked for an opportunity to speak, but the organisers refused his request.
