From the Archives
On 2 April 1918 Victoria College made way for the University of Stellenbosch (in 2000 Stellenbosch University) and four faculties (Science, Education, Arts and Social Sciences, and AgriSciences), 503 students and 40 lecturing staff officially started a new day as a fully-fledged University.
Today SU is home to 10 faculties and a vibrant and cosmopolitan community of more than 31 000 students and 3000 staff members, spread over five campuses (Corporate Communication, 1 April 2018)

The Archives plays a key role in safeguarding the University’s legacy by collecting, preserving and providing access to records of lasting historical significance. From Senate and Council minutes that date back to 1864 to photographic collections that capture moments of academic and social life, our work links the past with the present. We focus on making archival materials accessible through on-site research facilities and digital resources, enabling researchers, students and alums to explore and engage with this rich heritage.
