Department of Surgical Sciences

Preparing the next generation of experts

At the Department of Surgical Sciences at Stellenbosch University, our team of specialists across nine divisions and one centre, has redefined surgical care in South Africa and beyond. We have refined minimally invasive techniques and pioneered robotic-assisted procedures that have set new benchmarks in patient recovery. Our trauma centre stands out as a Western Cape-based regional model for emergency surgical care and our cutting-edge simulation labs ensure that every trainee gains hands-on experience in realistic scenarios. These achievements and a strong commitment to research have produced graduates who excel in challenging clinical environments.

Beyond the operating theatre, we integrate education, research and community care to drive transformative change in healthcare. Our faculty members lead national studies on innovative surgical techniques and patient management protocols and our training programmes are recognised for producing highly skilled surgeons who deliver compassionate, effective care.
