Division of Ophthalmology

At the Division of Ophthalmology, housed within the Department of Surgical Sciences, we have built a legacy of excellence in eye care and research. Our pioneering work in advanced surgical techniques such as femtosecond laser cataract surgery and innovative retinal procedures has significantly improved patient outcomes across South Africa and beyond.

Our comprehensive training programmes produce specialists skilled in glaucoma management, retinal surgery and corneal transplantation, ensuring our graduates are well-prepared to tackle complex ophthalmic challenges. We have introduced groundbreaking diagnostic methods that leverage state-of-the-art imaging technology to enable early detection of ocular diseases and prevent vision loss. Additionally, our well-established ocular tissue bank supports advanced research and surgical development.
