Division of Surgery

At the Division of Surgery, housed inside the Department of Surgical Sciences at Stellenbosch University, we redefine surgical care through dynamic education, breakthrough research and exceptional clinical practice. We pioneered minimally invasive robotic techniques for complex colorectal and cardiac procedures that have reduced recovery times and improved patient safety.

Our team developed advanced laparoscopic methods for liver resection and bariatric surgery that have become benchmarks in our region. We also established a leading trauma centre that has reshaped emergency surgical care, ensuring rapid and effective treatment for critical injuries.

Our research has influenced global surgical practices, with numerous publications in top-tier journals and collaborations with international experts. We introduced state-of-the-art simulation labs that provide realistic, hands-on training for our students, ensuring they are well-prepared for modern surgical challenges. These milestones highlight our dedication to cutting-edge innovation and patient-centred care as we continue to shape the future of surgery and healthcare in South Africa and beyond.
