Onlangse studies het onweerlegbare bewyse gelewer rakende die belangrikheid van mikrobiese gemeenskappe. Studies oor gronde het byvoorbeeld getoon dat mikrobiese gemeenskappe nutriëntherwinning en organiese materiaalontbinding dryf. In oseane is mikrobiese gemeenskappe bekend daarvoor dat hulle koolstofsekwestrasie bemiddel en die basis van mariene voedselwebbe vorm. Daar is getoon dat die mikrobioom komplekse voedingstowwe verteer en daar is bewyse dat mikrobes rolle kan speel in die beheer van voedseldrange en -gedrag. Ten spyte van die sterk bewyse oor die belangrikheid van die mikrobioom, is relatief min bekend oor Afrika-mikrobiome. ARM aan die US beoog om hoë-deurset-volgordebepaling te gebruik om geografies strategiese terrestriële, mariene en varswater-mikrobiome te bestudeer wat die huidige kennistekort verminder.


Hoof projekte
  • Die Afrika-mikrobioomprojek: 'n Multidissiplinêre inisiatief om omgewings- en gasheer-geassosieerde monsters van die Afrika-kontinent te orden.
  • Die vestiging van genetiese, filogenetiese en funksionele meganismes wat die mikrobioomdiversiteit van pool- en alpiene gronde vorm.
  • Mikrobiome as wagte van verandering in kus- en mariene omgewings.
  • Ondersoek na die gevolge van opkomende besoedelingstowwe in afvalwaterbehandelingsaanlegte op Afrika-riviere.
  • Karakterisering van omgewingsweerstande van diverse mikrobiome.
