Matie Buddy Programme

The Matie Buddy Programme is a cross-cultural initiative that connects local SU students with incoming international students - helping them adjust to life in South Africa before and after their arrival. Moving to a ne country, culture, and academic environment can be overwhelming. As a Matie Buddy, you play a vital role in helping international students settle into SU and make the most of their study abroad experience.

Programme Overview

The Matie Buddy Programme has two tiers, each offering opportunities for meaningful intercultural engagement:

1. Voluntary Programme

This informal stream allows local students to connect with international peers in a flexible, low-pressure format:

  • Contacting their international buddy prior to their arrival in Stellenbosch

  • Attending compulsory welcome and orientation events at the start of the semester

  • Participating in compulsory training

  • Supporting their buddy throughout the semester

  • Assisting with integration events such as ISOS, the International Food Evening, campus tours, etc.

Note: Only 70 students are selected for the Voluntary Programme each year.

2. Cross-Cultural Intelligence Training (Co-Curricular Programme)

This formal, structured version of the Matie Buddy Programme is presented in partnership with SU International and the Co-Curricular Office. It includes a series of intercultural electives, training sessions, and assessments aimed at developing your intercultural competence.

Successful participants receive co-curricular recognition on their academic transcript.

Co-Curricular Buddies commit to:

  • Contacting their international buddy prior to their arrival to Stellenbosch

  • Attending all compulsory training sessions and orientation events

  • Actively engage with intercultural electives and activities

  • Participating in structured assessments to demonstrate learning outcomes

  • Using the SUNLearn platform for reflections, discussion trends, quizzes and more

Note: Only 30 students are selected for the Co-Curricular Programme each semester.
