Department of Philosophy
The Stellenbosch Department of Philosophy is one of the foremost in Africa and offers an excellent education from undergraduate to PhD level. Our staff are all internationally recognised researchers with expertise in a wide range of fields, including moral philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind and cognition, metaphysics, philosophy of language, African philosophy, phenomenology, political philosophy, feminist theory, critical legal theory and critical social theory. We also have a renowned Centre for Applied Ethics, with research units devoted to bioethics, business ethics, environmental ethics, and social and political ethics.
Postgraduate Programmes
Honours in Philosophy
This is a one-year programme for students who hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, with a major in Philosophy.
Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Ethics
This is a one-year programme aimed at students who hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, but who do not have a background in Philosophy or Applied Ethics.
MPhil in Applied Ethics
This is a one-year degree programme aimed at students and professionals with an interest in applied ethics.
MA in Philosophy
This programme offers advanced training in Philosophy, with an eye towards independent research. A strong Honours degree in Philosophy, or a qualification judged to be equivalent by the Senate, is the usual prerequisite for admission into the MA Programme.
PhD in Applied Ethics
The PhD programme in Applied Ethics is aimed at students who wish to undertake substantial independent and original research on a problem in applied ethics.
