Postgraduate Studies

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science is recognised nationally, across Africa and internationally for its research excellence and societal impact. With eight departments and several renowned research centres, the Faculty offers advanced training in the physical, biological and mathematical sciences.

Postgraduates make up nearly a third of the student body, and the faculty awards a significant number of research master’s and doctoral degrees each year. Its academics are internationally published and widely recognised through National Research Foundation (NRF) ratings.

Through partnerships with government and institutions, the Faculty of Science plays an active role in advancing science and technology in society.

Entry into MSc and PhD programmes

Entry into research-based MSc and PhD programmes is highly competitive, as postgraduate training involves extended supervision and laboratory-based research with significant costs. Prospective students must identify and contact a potential supervisor in their field before applying. Applications without prior supervisor engagement cannot be considered. Departmental webpages on the faculty’s website provide details of staff, research groups, and additional information.
