Die Afdeling van Pulmonologie by Tygerberg Hospitaal is betrokke by omvattende onderrig, navorsing en kliniese dienste wat verband hou met respiratoriese gesondheid en kritieke sorg.

Die kernfokus sluit in die volledige bestuur van respiratoriese siektes op primêre en subspesialiteitsvlakke, gevorderde diagnostiese en terapeutiese intervensies, asook die bestuur van komplekse kritiek siek pasiënte wat multi-orgaanondersteuning benodig in samewerking met ons intensiewe sorgspan.

Requirements

Minimum educational qualification:
Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South
Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist Physician (i.e. needs to be registerable as Medical
Specialist Physician).
Registration with a professional council:
Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine.
Experience:
None after registration with the HPCSA.
Inherent requirement of the job:
Valid (Code B/EB) driver’s licence.
Willingness to work after hours.
Competencies (knowledge/skills):
Proficiency in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.

Duties (key result areas/outputs):

Service delivery will be in the Pulmonology unit and the Department of Medicine’s Critical Care unit.
The basic position will be full-time (40 hours per week).
Commuted overtime is mandatory and includes Pulmonology and ICU after hours calls.
The clinical service includes in-and out-patient management of lung diseases and inpatient management of patients admitted to intensive care.
Teaching post-and under-graduate students in pulmonology is required.
Registration for the MPhil (Pulmonology) degree and completion of the research component is required.

ONDERRIG EN LEER

Voorgraadse onderrig

Die afdeling is betrokke by die onderrig van mediese studente gedurende hul volle ses jaar van opleiding. In die vroeë stadiums word die teoretiese grondslag gelê, terwyl studente later praktiese blootstelling in interne geneeskunde en pulmonologie kry. 

Studente word bekendgestel aan diagnostiese ondersoeke wat spesifiek is aan pulmonologie – soos borsradiologie, longfunksietoetse en endobronchiale prosedures – en word begelei in die kliniese bestuur van pasiënte. 

Hulle roteer deur subspesialiteitsklinieke en ervaar die breë spektrum van respiratoriese patologieë wat uniek is aan Suid-Afrika.
 

Nagraadse opleiding

Die nagraadse program sluit gestruktureerde rotasies in vir beide kliniese assitstente in Interne Geneeskunde en vir senior kliniese assistente in Pulmonologie. Die opleiding beklemtoon praktiese kliniese ervaring en gevorderde vaardighede in respiratoriese geneeskunde, met parallelle opleiding in Kritieke Sorg, sodat spesialiste bevoegd is in die bestuur van komplekse pasiënte met gevorderde orgaanondersteuning.  

Die afdeling beskik oor een van die mees gevorderde brongoskopie-eenhede op die vasteland, met moderne toerusting. senior kliniese assistente voltooi hul opleiding met bevoegdheid in verskeie gevorderde endobronchiale en transtorasiese prosedures. 
Navorsingsgeleenthede vir meesters- en doktorale studie word sterk aangemoedig en ondersteun. 
Gestruktureerde leeraktiwiteite en eksamenvoorbereiding is ingebou om opleiding op die hoogste standaard te verseker.

Die afdeling bevorder samewerking en mentorskap, en kweek ’n ondersteunende omgewing vir beide kliniese praktyk en navorsing. Hierdie gestruktureerde benadering tot onderrig, navorsing en kliniese diens beklemtoon die afdeling se verbintenis tot uitnemendheid en tot die verbetering van pasiënte-uitkomste by Tygerberg Hospitaal.

Kortkursusse

Die afdeling bied ook kortkursusse aan vir gesondheidswerkers wat hul kennis en vaardighede in spesifieke areas wil verbeter, soos torakale ultraklank en navorsingsmetodologie. 

Verskeie leierskaps- en bestuurskursusse is ook beskikbaar vir afdelingspersoneel deur die universiteit.
 

NAVORSING

Navorsing binne die afdeling fokus op verskeie sleutelareas, insluitend:

  • Diagnose en sifting van longkanker
  • Bestuur van pleurale siektes
  • Asma en Chroniese Obstruktiewe Pulmonêre Siekte (COPD)
  • MIV en die impak daarvan op longgesondheid
  • Interstisiële longsiektes
  • Post-TB longsiektes en pulmonêre hipertensie
  • Kritieke sorg

Die afdeling het talle samewerkende projekte geïnisieer, waaronder die eerste toegewyde na-tuberkulose kliniek in Suid-Afrika. Publikasies uit die afdeling dek ’n wye reeks pulmonologiese onderwerpe en dra by tot die wêreldwye begrip van respiratoriese siektes en hul bestuur. Ons navorsingsbelange sluit in longkanker, Post-TB longsiektes, pulmonêre hipertensie, kunsmatige intelligensie, aansteeklike en pleurale siektes, pre-operatiewe evaluering van pasiënte vir longreseksie, toegepaste transtorakale ultraklank, intervensionele pulmonologie, kritieke sorg en, meer onlangs, COVID-19.

Die afdeling bied ’n uitgebreide reeks dienste aan, insluitend:

  • Volledige assessering en behandeling van respiratoriese siektes – binne- en buitepasiënt
  • Gespesialiseerde klinieke vir obstruktiewe en interstisiële longsiektes, strukturele longafwykings, pulmonêre hipertensie, longkanker en pleurale siektes
  • Gevorderde intervensionele pulmonologie – brongoskopie en pleurale prosedures
  • Samewerking met Onkologie en Chirurgie vir multidissiplinêre pasiëntsorg
  • Afstandskonsultasie en aanlyn verwysingsdienste vir komplekse gevalle
  • Uitreikprogramme na distrikshospitale om vaardighede uit te bou en te versterk
  • Bestuur van kritiek siek pasiënte uit alle dissiplines
     

Sosiale Impak

Die afdeling is aktief betrokke by gemeenskapsbewustheids- en opvoedingsprogramme oor longgesondheid, veral oor die voorkoming van tuberkulose en longkanker. 

Hierdie inisiatiewe poog om openbare gesondheid te verbeter en die las van respiratoriese siektes in die gemeenskap te verminder.

Die Afdeling van Pulmonologie bestaan uit ervare spesialiste met uiteenlopende belangstellings en kundigheidsvelde:

Coenie Koegelenberg

Prof. Coenie Koegelenberg, Hoof van die Afdeling, is nasionaal en internasionaal bekend vir sy werk in intervensionele pulmonologie, longkanker en pleurale siektes. Hy lei die Intervensionele Pulmonologie-diens, die voorste diens op die kontinent, en is ’n voormalige president van die Suid-Afrikaanse Torakale Vereniging (SATS) en tans lid van die uitvoerende raad.  

Brian Allwood

Prof. Brian Allwood het die Pulmonêre Hipertensie- en CTEPH-diens gevestig ná sy genootskap aan Harvard se Massachusetts General Hospital. Hy lei die Interstisiële Longsiekte-diens en het die wêreld se eerste Na-Tuberkulose Longsiekteskliniek gestig. 

Usha Lalla

Dr. Usha Lalla is ’n dubbelgesertifiseerde spesialis in Kritieke Sorg en Pulmonologie.  Sy bestuur die intensiewe sorg-eenheid en fokus op navorsing oor TB-terapie by kritiek siek pasiënte.  

Nevadna Singh

Dr. Nevadna Singh toon besondere belangstelling in interstisiële en obstruktiewe lugwegsiektes, en bevorder die gebruik van kardiopulmonêre oefentoetse om komplekse gevalle beter te verstaan. Sy lei ook die afdeling se akademiese program.  

Elvis Irusen

Emeritus Prof. Elvis Irusen, voormalige hoof van die afdeling en president van SATS, het ’n besondere belangstelling in die molekulêre en kliniese aspekte van asma en COPD.  

Saadiq Moolla

Dr. Saadiq Moolla is ’n kliniese navorser met breë belangstellings, waaronder tegnologie-integrasie en na-TB longsiektes. 

Faried Abdullah

Dr. Mohamed Faried Abdullah is ’n eksterne fellow, befonds deur die Melomed Groep. Hy het waardevolle ervaring opgedoen tydens die COVID-19-pandemie en is besig met ’n MPhil in Pulmonologie.  

Gordon Audley

Dr. Gordon Audley is ’n spesialisgeneesheer wat opleiding voltooi het by Groote Schuur Hospitaal en tans as pulmonologie-fellow by Tygerberg dien.  

Nicola Wells

Dr. Nicola Wills het in 2025 aangesluit ná opleiding by Groote Schuur Hospitaal. Sy bring ervaring uit die London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine en fokus op die kruisveld van aansteeklike en respiratoriese siektes.
