Semester Exchange Opportunities

With a global network of partner institutions across six continents, Stellenbosch University (SU) offers its students the opportunity to gain international experience through academic exchange. From Sciences Po in France, Leipzig University in Germany, West Virginia University in the USA, to Nagoya University in Japan, SU students can expand their horizons while earning credits toward their SU degree.

Through SU International, eligible students can apply for a semester or year-long exchange at one of more that 100 partner universities worldwide.

Important to Know

Who can Apply?

Exchange opportunities are open to undergraduate and postgraduate (master's level) students across all faculties.

NB: PhD students are generally not eligible for exchange placements, as they are typically hosted as visiting scholars rather than exchange students.

When can I Apply?

SU students can apply for an exchange programme at an international partner university for the 1st Semester or 2nd Semester.

The application cycle runs as follows:

  • Applications for exchanges during the 1st Semester: July - August
  • Applications for exchanges during the 2nd Semester: February - March

Getting Started on your Application

Requirements

Successful participation in a semester exchange depends on three key factors. Together, these ensure that your academic, financial, and personal goals are supported when choosing a suitable partner university.

1. Academic Requirements

You cannot attend a university that does not offer suitable course equivalents, especially if you need credits transferred back to SU. The same principle applies to students doing research. Going on a semester exchange can be a valuable and enriching experience for several reasons.

2. Financial Obligations

All semester exchanges work on a co-funding basis with support from SU, your chosen partner university, and funding from your side.

3. Personal Preference

If you prefer to travel to a particular country, start by looking at partner institutions from that country. Sometimes, however, it is important to question these preferences and move outside of your "comfort zone".

Where Can I Go on a Semester Exchange?

Students can apply to study on exchange at any of SU's partner universities for one semester.
