Research at the Intersection of
Data and Society
At the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking, research is not a solitary pursuit—it is a collaborative enterprise. We bridge the gap between abstract algorithms and tangible human impact by uniting technical experts with domain specialists across Stellenbosch University.
01. Transdisciplinary Innovation
We break down academic silos. By integrating computer science and statistics with fields like medicine, law, and agriculture, we develop robust models that solve complex, multifaceted problems rather than just theoretical puzzles.
02. Impact for Africa
Our research is deeply rooted in the African context. From tracking genomic epidemiology across the continent to using data for equitable policy-making, we are dedicated to innovations that improve lives in South Africa and beyond.
03. Ethical Stewardship
Data is powerful, and with that power comes responsibility. Our research priorities include data governance, algorithmic fairness, and the ethical implications of AI, ensuring that technology serves humanity fairly.
Centres, Labs & Chairs
The School acts as a central connector for Stellenbosch University’s data science capabilities. We work closely with specialized hubs—such as CERI, SACEMA, and the Policy Innovation Lab—to apply computational modelling to real-world challenges in health, finance, and governance.
Research Outputs
Our research output reflects a commitment to high-impact, interdisciplinary science. Our researchers and affiliates published extensively in top-tier international journals, including The Lancet, Nature Communications, and Science.
Key Research Themes:
- Genomic Epidemiology: Tracking pathogen evolution (SARS-CoV-2, HIV, TB) to inform public health responses.
- Applied AI & Engineering: From optimizing 5G networks to developing biometric solutions for field research.
- Data for Policy: Using data science to address inequality, health needs, and sustainability in Africa.
