Professor Burtram C. Fielding is a molecular biologist with expertise in virology, particularly in human coronaviruses. In April 2024, he became the Dean of the Science Faculty at Stellenbosch University. Prior to this, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), where he also held roles such as Director of Research Development and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. Prof. Fielding earned his PhD in Microbiology from UWC (2001) and an MPhil in Management Coaching from the Stellenbosch Business School (2019). His academic work includes contributions to the understanding of viral infections, with numerous peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and book chapters. He is also actively involved in mentoring students at various academic levels. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof. Fielding became a prominent voice in the media, both nationally and internationally, providing expert analysis and insights on the coronavirus. His frequent media engagements underscore his role as a communicator of scientific knowledge to the public. As Dean at Stellenbosch University, Prof. Fielding is committed to enhancing the faculty’s global research reputation, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
