What is Microbiology?

Why study Microbiology?

Our department brings together experts in diverse fields, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and cutting-edge research. From exploring microbial biodiversity unique to South Africa’s ecosystems to developing sustainable solutions for industrial processes and health applications, we are committed to addressing societal needs while advancing microbiology as a cornerstone of scientific progress. With state-of-the-art laboratories, strong industry partnerships, and a focus on both fundamental and applied research, we aim to inspire the next generation of scientists and make a meaningful impact locally and globally.

“Graduates can explore roles in research, quality control and compliance across healthcare, biotechnology and public health. They gain practical skills while advancing knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology and statistics.”

Our Programmes

The subject Microbiology is a major in a variety of degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Science. Microbiology is the study of microscopically small organisms such as bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, prions, protozoa, and algae. Microbial activities and interactions are vitally important to virtually all processes on earth, playing key roles in nutrient cycling, biodegradation, climate change, food spoilage, as well as the cause and control of disease. The science of microbiology aims to gain and expand our fundamental understanding of microorganisms by studying their morphology, metabolism, physiology, reproduction and genetics, as well as their interactions with other organisms and their role in ecology. Together the subject areas of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics form the core of Biotechnology.  The following degree programmes have Microbiology as a major:

BSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

This programme gives you the background knowledge to understand the functioning of any living organism at the molecular level and lays the foundation for a career requiring knowledge and skills in Molecular Biology and its application in Biotechnology

BSc Biodiversity and Ecology (Focal area: Plants and Microbes)

Microbiology forms an intrinsic part of climate and global change studies since impacts on micro-organisms will influence macro-organisms. Understanding and predicting impacts on microbes are further enhanced by understanding principles of ecology and evolution, and the diversity and physiology of plants. This combination of modules will provide you with valuable skills to pursue cross-cutting careers and research in botany, microbiology, and plant pathology in a changing global context.

Our postgraduate programmes

BScHons in Microbiology

The BSc Hons in Microbiology is an integrated one-year programme which includes a research project and acquiring skills in the techniques and theory of molecular biology.

MSc in Microbiology

This is an advanced research degree. Independent research on an approved topic as determined by the supervisor(s) and leading to a thesis is required.

PhD in Microbiology

This is an advanced research degree. A dissertation containing the results of your independent scientific research is required and a completed oral examination.
