We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the biomedical sciences.

Our faculty members are actively engaged in cutting-edge research across various disciplines, including chronic diseases of lifestyle, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology and drug delivery. By employing state-of-the-art technologies and integrative models, we aim to address research questions of national and global significance, contributing to the improvement of human health and well-being.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and lifelong learning. Our department values the development of thinkers and leaders who can make meaningful contributions to society through scientific innovation and community engagement.

Through our dedication to excellence in teaching and research, the Department of Physiological Sciences strives to be a world-class, future-focused institution that enhances human development, welfare, and health.

“We are committed to the development of thinkers and leaders who can make meaningful contributions to society through scientific innovation and community engagement.”

Our Programmes

Physiology is the study of the human body and all its intricate biochemical systems and pathways that makes the human body function. This programme provides the basis for understanding the functioning of the human body and mind, from molecular to systems level. The rationale is to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms that drive the onset of pathophysiological states, with the ultimate aim of designing novel therapeutic interventions.
The subject Physiology is a major in several degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Science:

BSc Human Life Sciences (Focal area: Biology)

This focal area provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the human body's functioning, emphasizing physiological systems and organs down to the molecular level. This three-year, full-time programme lays the groundwork for careers in experimental and applied physiology within both private and public sectors, as well as in academic settings.

BSc Human Life Sciences (Focal area: Biology with Psychology)

This focal area offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding human biology and behavior. This three-year, full-time programme integrates studies in physiology, genetics, and psychology, providing a comprehensive foundation for various career paths and postgraduate opportunities.

BSc (Focal area: Applied Medicinal Chemistry)

This focal area provides a broad, multidisciplinary background in Chemistry and Physiology to prepare students for careers in the pharmaceutical, allied health and related industries. You will gain a better understanding of how diseases work, from their molecular basis, through the cellular level, to the effects on the body. You will also be equipped with chemical knowledge and skills that are essential for identifying, synthesizing, and developing novel treatments.

BSc (Focal area: Biomedical Mathematical Sciences)

This focal area will develop your abilities to undertake advanced reflection on and develop solutions for problems that require an integration of knowledge and skills from multidisciplinary fields such as engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences. It leads to an honours programme in Physiological Sciences or in Mathematics. It could also lead to a master’s degree programme in Engineering Science and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering.

BSc Sport Science

Sport Science is an interdisciplinary area of study that delves into the realms of human physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition, all within the context of sports and exercise. This field of study is not only about enhancing athletic performance; it’s a comprehensive approach to promoting physical activity, understanding the human body’s response to exercise, and fostering overall health and well-being.

Our postgraduate programmes

BScHonours in Physiological Sciences

This honours programme focuses on advanced training in physiology, pathophysiology, metabolism and research methodologies. Students complete a research project and elective modules tailored to their academic interests.

MSc in Physiological Sciences

The MSc programme involves independent research culminating in a thesis. Students work with a supervisor to address a specific topic in physiological sciences.

PhD in Physiological Sciences

The PhD programme requires the completion of a dissertation based on original research. Students collaborate with supervisors to contribute to the field of physiological sciences.
