Department of Earth Sciences

Why study earth sciences?

At the Department of Earth Sciences, we study the processes that shape our planet - from the geological forces sculpting mountains to the environmental factors influencing Earth's ecosystems. This encompasses a broad spectrum of disciplines, including geology, geophysics and environmental science, giving students a comprehensive understanding of Earth’s complex systems.

Students experience hands-on fieldwork in South Africa's diverse landscapes and participate in cutting-edge laboratory research, ensuring practical and analytical expertise. Our students find employment in the minerals industry and the environmental sector, in South Africa and abroad.

Our Programmes

The Earth Sciences undergraduate programme integrates coursework and fieldwork to build a foundational understanding of Earth's processes. It develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills and provides hands-on experience essential for exploring Earth’s dynamic systems. Students can choose between two focal areas.

BSc Earth Science (Focal area: Applied Earth Science)

South Africa is a mineral-rich country with a unique geological history that spans over three billion years. It is the ideal work environment and training ground for any geologist. Our hands-on and theoretical training ensures that students are sought after by industry.

BSc Earth Science (Focal area: Geo-environmental Science

South Africa faces unique geo-environmental challenges such as climate change, air pollution, water scarcity, acid mine drainage and hazardous waste sites. Our field laboratory and classroom-based learning allow students to develop their understanding of the causes and consequences of these challenges and apply their minds to find innovative strategies for mitigation.

Our postgraduate programmes

BSc Honours

The Earth Sciences honours programme combines advanced coursework and research. It offers two streams: Applied Geology and Environmental Geochemistry. Students complete a research project and engage in hands-on learning, preparing for professional roles or further academic pursuits.

MSc

The Earth Sciences master’s programme focuses on independent research under expert supervision. Students produce a thesis addressing complex geological or environmental challenges, enhancing their analytical skills and preparing for project management roles or pursuits in research and development.

PhD

The PhD in Earth Sciences is a research-intensive programme that culminates in a thesis and oral defence. Candidates contribute to advancing Earth Science knowledge and work collaboratively to address global geological and environmental issues. Students are prepared for managerial roles or specialised scientific careers.
