The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) at Stellenbosch University enables a sustainable future for Africa through world-class renewable and sustainable energy research, advisory services, awareness campaigns and training programmes.

It was established in 2007 to facilitate and stimulate activities in renewable energy studies and research at the world-class Stellenbosch University. We work in partnership with other universities and research entities within the National System of Innovation in South Africa.

Our postgraduate programmes in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies and Smart Grid Technology focus on the training of scientists, planners, economists, project developers and engineers to equip them to work in the fascinating field of renewable and sustainable energy in Africa.

There are four masters and three diplomas to choose from:

  • Masters Programme in Sustainable Development under the School of Public Leadership.
  • Masters Degree (MEng Structured) in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Renewable and Sustainable Energy
  • Masters Degree in Smart Grid Technology under the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  • Masters Degree in Power System Planning and Operations under the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering: Focus on Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (Smart Grid Technology) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (Power System Planning and Operations) under the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
