Department of Civil Engineering

Preparing the next generation of industry experts

Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering, one of the departments of the Engineering Faculty at Stellenbosch University. Here you can find out what studying civil engineering is like, how to apply for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, what research work we are doing, information on academic and support staff as well as register for a CPD course or subscribe to our mailing list to receive CPD course information.

Our department isn’t just about the technical stuff. It’s about teaching you to think critically, solve problems creatively and contribute meaningfully. Whether you’re looking to start your undergraduate studies, specialise in a master’s degree, or take your research to the next level, we have a programme that fits your goals.

Undergraduate

The Department offers a four-year, ECSA accredited, undergraduate Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree in Civil Engineering, which can lead to registration as a professional engineer. We take pride in developing highly skilled, well-rounded professional engineers.

BEng in Civil Engineering

Are you thinking about starting a career in civil engineering? Our four-year ECSA-accredited BEng programme is the perfect place to begin.  You’ll learn how to design roads, plan water systems, build structures and manage big construction projects. It’s hands-on, challenging and designed to prepare you for life as a professional engineer.

Postgraduate

Research Master of Engineering (MEng)

If you have a specific question or challenge, this is your chance to explore it. With one-on-one guidance from our academics, you’ll focus on research that could make a real difference in the field.

Structured Master of Engineering (MEng)

– excluding Water and Construction Engineering and Management

The MEng (Structured) is perfect for those who prefer a more organised approach to learning. This programme combines advanced coursework with practical knowledge in specific civil engineering areas. It is designed to deepen your understanding and sharpen your skills, preparing you for higher-level roles in the industry.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering

For those interested in exploring complex engineering problems and developing innovative solutions, the PhD programme offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to the engineering field. You’ll be guided by experienced staff as you undertake original research that pushes the boundaries of current knowledge.

Doctor of Engineering (DEng)

The DEng is designed for those who typically already have a PhD in Engineering, and the Department nominates candidates for the programme. Consider this programme, if you have made significant contributions to real-world engineering problem solving over several years.

You’ll learn from experienced academics, work on innovative research projects, and build skills that will prepare you for a rewarding career while instilling confidence in your abilities to impact the engineering field.
