Course Description
In this hands-on research and experience led interactive one-week workshop participants will explore, discuss and engage with sound practices working with the intellectual learning, personal and institutional dimensions of supervision along the whole doctoral journey.
The goal of this workshop is that participants will further develop their research and experience informed good practice in doctoral supervision and will feel confident, informed and well equipped in their supervision practices.
Participants will explore experience (including their own) and research based ideas and good practices in doctoral supervision along the whole doctoral learning journey focusing on: development of their own skills and the sound experiences of their doctoral students in line with the three dimensions of (i) intellectual and learning development, (ii) personal development , and (iii) engagement with appropriate institutional processes.
Course Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will gain:
- Research and experience underpinned information and effective examples of good practice in supervision along the whole doctoral learning journey
- Research and experience based insights into working with doctoral students to prompt and support their research development in the project and writing processes in the thesis
- A rich set of understandings about varied good supervision practices face-to-face and remotely which they can put into effect in their own supervision practice
- Insights and practical problem solving strategies from engagement with the activities in the workshop and from discussion with the full community of supervisor colleagues in the workshop
- A research and experience based understanding of what examiners are looking for in good theses and engaged plans about how to work with diverse students to help them reach the quality of a good thesis which passes and makes a sound contribution to knowledge

Target Audience
The course is designed for individuals who have undertaken some form of research themselves, at any level, and who are interested in supervising research students at master’s or doctoral level. It is also suitable for those who may already have begun supervising research at any level.
Course Materials
All course materials will be uploaded onto the MS Teams online platform. Worksheets, exercises/tasks and class notes will be provided on this platform and/or distributed during the classes.
What to Bring
Laptop, stable internet connection and notepads. Course material will be provided electronically.
Delegate Requirements
Participants should have some understanding of research and research supervision, perhaps through having been supervised themselves or through supervising at undergraduate level. The workshop is interactive, so a willingness to engage in discussions with others and participate actively in course presentations and workshop activities is essential.
Workshop Format
The workshop will be highly interactive in nature. Participants will be expected to participate actively in the learning process and share ideas and workshop activities with others. Pre reading and thinking about their own practice as researchers and supervisors is necessary as is reading, questioning and discussing with others during the course.
The ADA reserves the right to cancel any course should the minimum required number of participants not be reached. In such cases, all fees already paid will be fully refunded, or where possible, delegates will be offered the option to transfer to an alternative course.
Cancellations and Refunds
The final date to withdraw from the ADA Winter School is 29 May 2026. Participants who withdraw on or before this date will be eligible for a 50% refund. After 29 May 2026, no refunds will be issued, unless a replacement participant can be found to take their place.
The ADA also reserves the right to cancel a course where necessary.
