Begin your journey as a Matie with an unforgettable evening of unity, inspiration and campus spirit.

Welcoming Ceremony and Dream Walk

Date: Wednesday 28 January 2026 
Time: 17:30–22:00 
Venue: Danie Craven Stadium

First-year (newcomer) students will be officially welcomed by Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Deresh Ramjugernath. The ceremony will also be attended by members of the Rectorate, deans, various other members of management, the SRC and other student structures.

This event marks the official start of the University’s Welcoming Period, a programme of activities designed to help students settle in and begin their university journey.

Welcome event Dream walk

Dream Walk

The iconic Dream Walk on Victoria Street will follow the Welcome Ceremony. Launched in 2019, this tradition allows students to:

  • Walk under a banner symbolising the start of their academic journey
  • Attach handwritten cards with their dreams to the trees lining Victoria Street

Important information for parents and guardians

  • Expect heavy traffic on all main routes to Stellenbosch and in town on Wednesday 28 January 2026.
  • Bring bottled water, as temperatures in Stellenbosch in January can be quite hot.
  • Follow social media updates about the Welcoming Period under the hashtag #helloMaties.
