  • On 13 March 2026, SU’s Centre for Teaching and Learning hosted a workshop on effective communication and public speaking for lecturers, facilitated by Vicky Davis. Attended by eight participants, the session combined theory and practice, covering presentation structure, anxiety management, body language, slide design, online communication, and Q&A skills. Participants also presented recorded talks and received feedback in a supportive environment, with many reporting improved confidence and presentation skills.

On 13 March 2026, a group of Stellenbosch University (SU) lecturers gathered for a professional learning workshop titled “Effective communication for lecturers: Building confidence in public speaking and presentation”. Facilitated by media personality Vicky Davis, the session attracted eight participants from different faculties and centres.

The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by SU’s Centre for Teaching and Learning to help lecturers enhance their teaching and engagement practices, particularly where they are required to communicate clearly, confidently and impactfully. Combining both theoretical insights and practical application, participants engaged with key principles of public speaking while also reflecting on their own communication styles.

Topics covered included the dos and don’ts of effective public communication, strategies for managing anxiety, and techniques for structuring clear and compelling presentations. The physical aspects of communication, including voice, body language, and gestures, were also discussed, as well as how to design effective slideshows, navigate online communication environments, and handle question-and-answer sessions with confidence.

The workshop was structured in two parts: The first introduced core concepts through interactive discussions and visual examples. In the second part, participants presented their own recorded talks and received constructive feedback through peer engagement and personalised coaching, creating opportunities for immediate improvement.

The supportive and relaxed learning environment encouraged participants to experiment with new approaches to communication. Many already reported noticeable improvements in their confidence and presentation skills by the end of the session.

With over two decades of experience in the South African entertainment industry, Davis has significant expertise to share. In addition to her work as actress, director and producer, she has spent more than 12 years as a media coach, helping academics, postgraduate students and professionals develop their communication skills.
