Dignity restored – SU chemistry graduate’s journey to success

  • Blessed Muyanga has graduated with a bachelor's degree in science.
  • His plight during his studies sparked a fundraising campaign that has raised more than R180 000 for science students in need.
  • First-year lecturer Dr Marietjie Lutz started the Wheels of Opportunity initiative when she realised that Muyanga was one of many students with financial challenges.

Blessed Muyanga came to Stellenbosch University (SU) in 2022 in pursuit of a science degree and a sense of independence. He never imagined he would become the inspiration behind a lecturer’s fundraising campaign that has now raised more than R180 000 to support students in need.

This week, just days after his former science lecturer, Dr Marietjie Lutz, completes the Absa Cape Epic as part of the Wheels of Opportunity (WOOP) campaign, Muyanga will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in science. For him, the milestone represents more than academic achievement: It marks “leaving behind the shame that followed me for much of my life”.

Muyanga’s success is also a testament to the impact of fundraising and support. Without it, he and countless other students might have had to abandon their dreams.

Originally from Johannesburg, Muyanga stayed with his uncle in Atlantis when he began his studies at SU. Adjusting to Stellenbosch’s more laid-back environment was challenging, and things became harder when relatives unexpectedly withdrew promised financial support. The frequent travel between Atlantis and Stellenbosch drained his finances and affected his health, making basic expenses like rent and food daily struggles. He was also unable to pay his tuition fees.

Seeing Muyanga going from door to door seeking help with accommodation and meals, Lutz stepped in to secure funding for his essential needs and tuition. Recognising that many students face similar barriers, she combined her passion for cycling with a creative fundraising idea.

For the first WOOP campaign, she cycled 600 km from George to Stellenbosch, raising more than R70 000. The following year, she continued the effort, raising over R100 000 for the campaign. This year, she and friend Junita Kruger cycled over 700 km during the gruelling Absa Cape Epic as their fundraising mission.

Muyanga is full of praise for Lutz’s dedication. “My dignity has been restored thanks to the WOOP campaign. For once in my life, I was able to devote myself fully to my studies without worrying about money.” He laughingly admits, however, that her efforts have not inspired him to take up cycling. “The last time I rode a bike, it was a complete disaster.” Instead, he relaxes by spending time in nature, going for long walks, reading, and listening to classical music.

Reflecting on his journey, Muyanga attributes his steadfastness in the face of hardship to a strong support system, mentors like Lutz, and his Catholic faith. Through perseverance, support and determination, he has not only earned his degree but reclaimed his dignity and hope for the future.
