Departmental Bursaries
WHO: Registered postgraduate students in Literature affiliated with the
Department of Afrikaans and Dutch.
HOW: Send a short motivation why you deserve the bursary; as well as a short
explanation of your postgraduate studies in Literature.

Terms: Preference is given to Master's and Doctoral students. Research must be focused on Literature. Students who have already received the bursary in the past will not be considered again. Full-time employed persons will also not be considered. Bursary is paid in two instalments.
Postgraduate students can apply for the Kocks bursary – specifically intended for Linguistics students – by sending a short motivation about your studies and about yourself.

PhD and M students can apply for the J.P. Coetsee bursaries – one bursary of R10 000 is specifically intended for postgraduate study in the Afrikaans linguistics and one bursary of R10 000 is specifically intended for postgraduate study in
Afrikaans literature.
Apply for the bursary by indicating what your study is about and sending a short motivation about your study and about yourself; as well as which bursaries you have already received for the current year. Also clearly indicate which bursary you
are applying for, namely linguistics or literature.

Bursary donor:
Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (South Africa).
Purpose:
Assistance with tuition fees or program costs.
Who qualifies?
- Current postgraduate students registered in 2026 and who are undertaking research in or on any of the official South African languages.
- South African citizens only.
- Full-time students only.
How do I apply?
Make sure your application includes the following information:
- A short motivation explaining why you deserve the bursary. Pay particular attention to tuition fees (other expenses such as accommodation, transport, books or IT resources play no role in the awarding of the bursary).
- A breakdown of your postgraduate studies.
- A certified copy of your South African identity document – make sure the information and photo are clear.
- Proof of registration for the current academic year.
