Undergraduate modules
The Department of Afrikaans and Dutch offers two undergraduate streams: Afrikaans Language Learning and Afrikaans and Dutch.
Afrikaans Language Learning is for students who did not have Afrikaans Home Language at school, but who are interested in studying Afrikaans language and culture. Afrikaans and Dutch is for students who had Afrikaans Home Language and Afrikaans First Additional Language at school and who want to study Afrikaans and Dutch literature and linguistics.

Where does Afrikaans come from, where is it going and who does it belong to? And are direct translations really a mortal sin? In this module we look at all
the facets of this language that is also an identity, a culture and, sometimes, a stereotype. We look at the connection between Dutch and Afrikaans, and also the other languages that contributed to the emergence of Afrikaans. We read prose and poetry, practice our writing
skills, learn about sounds and meaning, and look at interesting debates and topics in and around the language. We even undertake a Dutch adventure!

Afrikaans isn’t a foreign language! Join us and in listening and reading the language and before you can say “My ouma in kaneel” you’ll be speaking the lingo in no time. This module is for students who are not native speakers of Afrikaans and passed Afrikaans as a second language in Grade 12. Improve your skills in Afrikaans for successful studies and more career opportunities. We will focus on strategic reading skills and listening ability, advanced handling of texts, visual media and films, as well as speaking skills.

This is a module for speakers with no formal knowledge of Afrikaans or who have passed it as a third language in Grade 12. Improve your skills in Afrikaans for
successful study and career opportunities by joining our course. We will focus on vocabulary enhancement, strategic listening and reading, and elementary interaction in Afrikaans around thematically related texts. Let’s have some fun in Afrikaans!
