A final-year Industrial Engineering student, Daniel has spent his degree standing between the posts for Maties men's hockey. This year, that journey reached a high point: the team took on TUKS in the USSA Hockey final and came away 4-2 winners, national champions. Daniel was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament for the third consecutive year — an achievement built on consistency, focus, and years of quiet work.
We caught up with Daniel to reflect on how sport and studies have shaped each other, how he manages both at a high level, and what he would tell a school learner who has never heard of Industrial Engineering.
You've been Maties' goalkeeper throughout your Industrial Engineering degree — how have those two journeys grown alongside each other over the years?
They certainly have. The world of high-performance sport and academics is not as far apart as people might intuitively think. Both require discipline and perseverance to excel on any level, and growth in one inevitably translates into growth in the other.
How do you manage your studies alongside sport at such a high level?
I won't beat around the bush, it has been extremely challenging at times, especially when missing extended periods of class repeatedly for tours. I think if I didn't love hockey and high-performance sport as much as I do, I would have cracked long ago. People speak about having to make sacrifices, and the pains of being a student-athlete, which I don't agree with. There is no sacrifice if you are choosing to do what you love to do, and I certainly love what I do. I wake up every day excited to train, to improve, to chase excellence and mastery in my field. I am beyond blessed to be able to pursue my dreams in sport while equipping myself with a fantastic degree.

Best advice for a student trying to chase two passions at once?
Have your priorities sorted, and do not compromise on them.
For a high-school learner who loves problem-solving but has never heard of Industrial Engineering - what would you tell them about the degree, and why it suits someone like you?
I learnt very early in my studies that Industrial Engineering is a degree that lends itself toward intuitive problem-solving and developing a real understanding of concepts that you need to apply, rather than parrot learning and hours of memorisation. I figured out that I could spend less time studying than I initially thought would be necessary, because I put all my focus on understanding the work, rather than memorising it. For someone pursuing a passion outside of their studies that demands a great amount of time, this degree is perfect if you have a mathematical, problem-solving mind.
