Journalism graduates score SAFTA-nomination for doccie
- Historic First: Four 2023 Journalism graduates earned the department’s first-ever SAFTA nomination for their documentary, Van Brood en Water.

Four graduates from the BAHons Journalism class of 2023 have made history through a nomination for the Best Student Film at the 19th Annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs19). This is the first time a student film from the Department of Journalism has received such a nomination.
Stefani Terblanche (director), Keziah Bailey, Sebastian Paulus and Jodi-Mari Adams completed their documentary "Van Brood en Water" as part of their documentary storytelling workshops - in less than a month.
Jurg Slabbert, the lecturer for this course, says he is "incredibly proud" of these students. He adds that their nomination represents "a historic milestone that speaks to the standard of [the department's] training".
"Their success is a direct testament to the intensity of our programme; it proves that our students are not only creative but can thrive under immense pressure. And it also underscores how well-equipped they are for the rigorous demands of the professional industry, confirming they are ready to make an immediate impact as storytellers," says Slabbert.
Since its first screening in the Neelsie Cinema in 2023, "Van Brood en Water" has also had screenings at, amongst others, the Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees and the Encounters South African International Film Festival
The SAFTAs19 prize-giving ceremony will take place on 14 March and will be presented live on SABC2.
