Honours students visit Cape Town media houses

Department of Journalism

  • Site Visits: Journalism students toured major Cape Town newsrooms like SABC, Primedia, and Media24.
  • Industry Insights: The class engaged with veteran producers, DJs, and alumni for hands-on reporting practice.
  • Lift Drama: Student Kwanda Mkhonto rescued 10 classmates after they got stuck in an SABC elevator.

Starting with a “GOOD MORNING!” shout-out, in studio with Good Hope FM DJ Leigh-Anne Williams, Stellenbosch University’s Journalism class of 2026 spent a day visiting Cape Town newsrooms on Friday 6 February. The first stop at the SABC in Sea Point was not without drama as 10 students got stuck in a lift, their classmate Kwanda Mkhonto emerging as the hero when he managed to open the doors just as nerves were getting frayed.

Hosted by SABC Western Cape regional head of news Nazeem Dramat, the students also had the opportunity to visit radio and TV studios, meet radio personalities such as Tozama “Sis Toz” Ngcongolo at Umhlobo Wenene FM, and do mock live crossings with reporting staff.

Other stops on the tour included Primedia where students engaged with show producers of Lester Kiewit’s CapeTalk breakfast show and deputy editor at Eyewitness News (EWN) Zulpha Khan. The tour wrapped up with warm welcomes from Crozier Street alumni at You/Huisgenoot; Network24; Netwerk24 and Jonathan Ball Publishers housed at the Media24 building on the foreshore.
