  • At the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (SUBG), this spirit of action will take root on Friday, 17 July 2026, when volunteers gather for 67 minutes of conservation in support of the Garden's threatened lowland habitat beds.

Every year Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change often begins with something simple, like giving our time.

This year's Mandela Day theme, "It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity," speaks to the power of collective action and serves as a reminder that every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to building stronger communities and a more sustainable future.

At the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (SUBG), this spirit of action will take root on Friday, 17 July 2026, when volunteers gather for 67 minutes of conservation in support of the Garden's threatened lowland habitat beds.

These carefully curated beds represent some of South Africa's most vulnerable plant communities. Like many natural ecosystems it requires ongoing care and stewardship to survive and thrive. By helping to remove invasive weeds, volunteers will play a direct role in protecting indigenous biodiversity and preserving an important conservation and educational resource for future generations.

Much like Mandela's legacy, conservation is rooted in the belief that the actions we take today will shape the world we leave behind tomorrow. Whether we are supporting people, protecting ecosystems or strengthening our communities, lasting change happens when individuals come together in service of a common goal.

The SUBG therefore invites staff, students and members of the wider community to spend their 67 minutes making a difference this Mandela Day.

Spaces are limited, and booking is essential.
