Stellenbosch University International (SU International or SUI) contributes to Stellenbosch University’s (SU) aspiration of being an internationally recognised research-intensive Institution deeply rooted in our local community, region and the African continent. Internationalisation at SU is a comprehensive, evolving and dynamic process that actively engages faculties and support services environments, ensuring global reach and relevance across all levels of the University.
We promote internationalisation through:
- Purposeful bilateral partnerships, both in and beyond Africa.
- Participation in multilateral alliances and networks.
- Global learning for a transformative student experience; and
- The creation of a platform for research, policy and practice development relating to international higher education in Africa.
These efforts are underpinned by:
- Focused information management;.
- An efficient services platform; and
- Ongoing productive engagement with national and international stakeholders.
Centres within SU International
The Office of the Senior Director at Stellenbosch University plays a pivotal role in our internationalisation efforts, providing essential division oversight and strategic direction.
Key responsibilities include:
- Oversight: Ensuring comprehensive internationalisation and overseeing the implementation of internationalisation initiatives.
- Management: Engaging and managing local and international stakeholder engagement to foster strong global partnerships and collaborations.
- Coordination with the SU Brussels representation
The Centre for Capacity Development (CCDA) aims to contribute to the development of the African continent and its people by developing new and emerging scholars in Africa. It achieves this by connecting scholars globally and creating opportunities for research, as well as for teaching and learning development in Higher Education.
The CCDA works closely with the Centre for Collaboration in Africa (CCA) to identify partners and opportunities. It provides high-quality, affordable, competency-based education that enhances transdisciplinary pre-doctoral through to post-doctoral scholarship and career development.
The Centre is home to:
- African Doctoral Academy
- Stellenbosch Unit for International Credentialing
- The Unit for International Higher Education in Africa Research (U-IHEAR)
The Centre for Collaboration in Africa (CCA) leverages bilateral agreements and mobility programmes for staff, postdoctoral fellows and students to nurture relationships with institutions in other African countries. It also supports themed research networks, thereby broadening the reach of SU's research, advancing the growth of its scholars, and furthering the University's African network.
Included in the scope of the CCA's work are:
- Partnerships in Africa
- Networks in Africa such as the PERI PERI -U
- It Also Administers postgraduate scholarships as well as the Africa Collaboration grant

The Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) consists of three functional units: The Unit for Partnerships, the Unit for Student Mobility and the Unit for Global Learning.
The centres activities include:
- Bilateral and Multilateral Partnership development
- Staff Mobility
- Global Learning Programmes
- Non-Degree student Mobility
- The CGE supports the activities and aims of the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competences and the Stellenbosch University Japan Centre.
The SU International Services Centre is responsible for administrative services and the reception of all visitors. Our services are available to international students, visiting academics, and incoming delegations.
The centre provides the following Administrative Services:
- International student finances
- Immigration assistance
- Support for prospective international undergraduates, including assessing their foreign school qualifications
- Assisting with admissions enquiries
- Assisting with accommodation for full-degree international students, visiting academics, and delegations
- Airport transfers for international students upon their arrival on campus for the first time.
The Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University (CISU) aims to promote the Chinese language and culture. The Institute offers Chinese language and culture lessons to the SU community and the wider Western Cape Province,targeting those individuals interested in learning Chinese and understanding its culture.
The CISU offers weekly Chinese language courses to SU students, school learners, and the broader Stellenbosch community throughout the year. Other CISU activities include:
- Chinese cultural events
- The Academic Forum on Traditional Chinese Medicine
- Provides support for mobility programmes to China
- Facilitates the Confucius Classroom at Rietenbosch Primary School
Stellenbosch University Japan Centre (SUJC) aims to be a leading hub for academic, research and cultural exchange between South Africa and Japan, contributing to Stellenbosch University’s principal mission to advance research excellence and knowledge of broader social benefit.
