Non-SU Funding
There are alternative funding options a student can explore – from crowdfunding to private company scholarships that may require a work commitment after you graduate.
Eligibility criteria may not necessarily include financial need, and as the application dates also vary, please make sure you research your options and apply timeously.
Stellenbosch University has limited funds available and applying for SU funding is not a guarantee that a student will be granted an award. All prospective and current undergraduate students are encouraged to pursue all available financial assistance avenues and the filter list includes options and resources as a good starting point.
AllBursaries
With an up-to-date list of bursaries currently available in South Africa, AllBursaries display funding options sorted by subject matter/ industry and by closing date. This helps you ensure you submit your application in time. The site also includes detailed information about the NSFAS application and other funding opportunities.
Bloemhof Beursfonds Trust (IT734/2001)
Please note this bursary is for Afrikaans-speaking and Afrikaans home language applicants only.
The Bloemhof Bursary Fund Trust’s objectives are to award young people scholarships and grants for study, research and education to achieve their dreams and ideals, in order to make a positive contribution in the broader South African society.
Guidelines and online application form for prospective and enrolled Stellenbosch University (SU) students are available on the website https://bloemhofbeurstrust.co.za.
Eligibility conditions
- Only undergraduate studies, with the exception of LL.B. students and Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education.
- Combined parental income of between R350 000 and R900 000 per annum.
Applications for 2026 are now open and will close on 15 October 2025.
Bursaries South Africa
Bursaries South Africa is a comprehensive bursary website for students who are looking to start or to continue their tertiary studies, and who have a strong academic record but lack the funding needed to do so.
For ease of navigation, a good starting point is to click the Closing soon tab and review the bursaries categorised by closing month and relevant faculty/study programme. The website also includes useful tips and advice, like how to write a bursary motivational letter and tips to submitting a bursary application.
FEENIX crowdfunding
Feenix is an online fundraising platform launched in June 2017 in response to the #FeesMustFall movement that spread across university campuses in South African during 2015 and 2016.
Standard Bank is a founding partner and feenix provides students with the tools for formalise their fundraising efforts and a channel for funders to find students they wish to support.
Is feenix for you? If you answer yes to all six questions below, then you are eligible to start your fundraising journey today:
- Are you an SA citizen, permanent residence, refugee, or asylum seeker?
- Are you registered at a public South African university?
- Do you have current or historical debt owing to your university?
- Is your combined household income under R600 000 per year?
- Do you have a certified copy of your identity document?
- Do you have an official fee statement – not older than 30 days and on the university’s letterhead?

An online resource for bursary opportunities in South Africa as well as within Africa. You can browse by organisation, study field, or type.
The website also offers career and study guidance for learners.
ISFAP
The Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP) is open to South African citizens who will be studying for a degree for the first time in the upcoming academic year and who come from a home with a gross household income (before tax and deductions) is less than R600 000 per year (R50 000 per month).
Applicants must be provisionally accepted to Stellenbosch University in an ISFAP-supported degree programme. These include certain programmes within the faculties of Economic and Management Sciences, and Engineering, as well as BSc Food Science, MBChB, and BDatSci.
