The Master of Science in Agriculture in Agronomy entails independent research on a chosen topic conducted under a supervisor and has a modular component of the programme aimed at the acquisition of generic research skills to support the research component of the programme. Research projects can be selected from one of the following themes: tillage, weed control, crop production, stress physiology, vegetable production or pasture management is undertaken. A further objective is the deepening of subject knowledge on general crop physiology through self-study.

Master of Science in Agriculture in Animal Sciences

The Master of Science in Agriculture in Animal Sciences entails independent research conducted under a supervisor but you could, in consultation with your supervisor, be requested to follow additional modules, including Biometry 821 (Biometrical Applications). Research is possible in the following fields: • Increase in the efficiency of animal production and animal products; • The improvement of product quality in the farming of large and small livestock, and poultry; • Increase in the efficiency and production of alternative animal species; and • Intensive and extensive aquaculture systems, feeding and breeding.

Master of Science in Agriculture in Entomology

The Master of Science in Agriculture in Entomology entails independent research on a topic from fields which include morphology and systematics, insect conservation ecology and integrated pest management of insects, conducted under a supervisor. As part of the process, you must present a seminar to the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology on your proposed thesis. On completion of the research, you must write up your results and submit them in the format of a thesis. The thesis must meet the requirements for a master’s thesis as prescribed by the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology and Stellenbosch University.

Master of Science in Agriculture in Genetics

The Master of Science in Agriculture in Genetics entails independent research conducted under a supervisor. Research projects cover different aspects of plant breeding such as: • Biometrical applications in data analysis; • Genotype-environment interactions; • The application or modification of conventional plant breeding methodology; • The application of cytogenetic procedures; • Biochemical and molecular markers for the location, mapping and tagging of useful genes; • Genotyping and marker-assisted selection; • Transfer of genes from wild related species to cultivated cereals employing wide crossings; and • Cytogenetic manipulations or direct gene transfer by means of genetic engineering.

The Master of Science in Agriculture in Horticultural Science consists of a research and a modular component. The research topic can be chosen from the following themes: • Growth and development strategies for deciduous fruit, citrus and fynbos plants that limit production and/or quality such as fruit set, fruit size, colour development, tree architecture and light interception; • Flower initiation, dormancy and stress conditions, for example sun scorch in fruit, postharvest physiology including controlled atmospheric storage requirements for deciduous fruit, citrus and cut flowers; or • Physiological abnormalities such as gel decline in plums, surface scorch marks on apples, blackening of protea foliage. The modular component of the programme is aimed at the acquisition of generic research competencies to support the research part of the programme. You must also deepen your subject knowledge on general plant physiology through self-study.

This Bachelor of Arts Honours in Journalism programme is offered full-time, takes one year to complete and leads to a professional qualification. The programme includes classes from February to November, career-oriented assessment, theoretical and practical tests, an internship at an approved media institution, as well as an in-depth project. The practical component includes regular contributions to SMFNews, a digital community news publication. The programme is presented as an intensive full-time 24/7 course consisting of practicals and theory.

Bachelor of Arts Honours in Language Practice

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Language Practice programme trains you as a researcher in translation/interpreting and editing. A further aim is to train you as a language practitioner in two of the following languages: Afrikaans, English, an African language, South African Sign Language, Chinese, French, Dutch and German. Not all the language options will necessarily be offered each year. This programme is presented by means of lectures.

Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology programme is a one-year full-time programme and is presented in English. It is a full-time academic programme which may lead to further postgraduate studies in Psychology, both in South Africa and internationally. The programme cannot be completed on a part-time basis and does not lead to registration as a Counsellor or Psychometrist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The Honours programme does, however, provide a sound theoretical foundation for subsequent training as a Psychologist and can lead to admission to professional Masters degree training programmes in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology and Research Psychology. The Honours programme is theoretical in its orientation and aims to provide students with a solid and advanced foundation in Psychology as an academic discipline. The Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Mathematical Statistics: Focal Area in Data Science program is presented jointly by the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Department of Computer Science. Consequently students have to be admitted to postgraduate study by both these departments. A bachelor’s degree with an average mark of at least 65% in Mathematical Statistics 3 is required, together with a satisfactory mark of at least 65% in Computer Science up to at least second year level.

Master of Commerce in Transport Economics

The Master of Commerce in Transport Economics consists of a full thesis option. This field is a branch of economics pertaining to the optimal distribution of scarce resources between the transport sector and other sectors, as well as within the transport sector itself. Within the transport sector transport economics will, for example, look at the equity of travel and freight charges, and also at subsidisation as an instrument for the redistribution of income. Transport economics is also involved in the economic evaluation of various transport projects.

The Master of Philosophy in Environmental Management by full thesis programme entails independent research conducted under a supervisor. Students may apply after successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma (Environmental Management). This is a one-year programme with a research component offered on the Stellenbosch Campus.

Master of Philosophy in HIV/AIDS Management

The Master of Philosophy in HIV/AIDS Management is a one-year or two-year programme presented through hybrid learning. It includes a workshop in Stellenbosch as well as interactive online sessions during the year and is offered in English. The degree consists of four compulsory course work modules (25 credits each) and a research assignment (80 credits). It makes use of continuous assessments by means of individual assignments for the course work. The research assignment is assessed by internal examiners. Students must pass all four modules and the research assignment to obtain the necessary 180 credits.

MEd (Educational Psychology)

The Master of Education in Educational Support serves as requirement for registration as psychologist (in the category Educational Psychology) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The Board for Psychology of the HPCSA has implemented revised requirements for the educational psychology programme. To comply with these changes, we have incorporated a full one-year internship into the curriculum, which has implications for the minimum duration of the programme. You will be required to complete the entire coursework component of the programme and obtain faculty approval for your research proposal before commencing the internship. The internship and research components of the programme can be completed concurrently within the same academic year.
