Current undergraduate students
The Faculty of Science has introduced a number of interventions to support undergraduate students, such as a tutor programme in which students who are experiencing problems with their studies are identified early and academic support provided. With regard to language policy, at the first-year level we attempt to provide tuition in Afrikaans and English in parallel groupings, with interpreting services offered as and where needed from the second-year level.
Academic requests for the second semester
All requests to deviate from your current prescribed curriculum must be addressed to the Academic Committee at the link below. The Academic Committee will consider the following requests:
- Deviation from the prescribed requirements as published in the Yearbook (prerequisite pass modules, prerequisite modules, corequisite modules);
- Changes in programme or focal area; and/or
- Deviation from the registered curriculum for modules and/pr programmes offered by the Faculty of Science.
The form for requests regarding the second semester will be live from 18 May 2026 until 17 July 2026.
Students will be notified of the outcome before the start of the first semester via their SUN-email address. The decision of the Academic Committee is final, and no late requests or appeals will be considered.
AI Guidelines for Students
The rapid emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping the landscape of higher education. Within science, where analytical thinking, problem-solving, experimentation, and innovation are central to learning, these technologies present both extraordinary opportunities and significant challenges in terms of ethical use, academic integrity, and pedagogical value.
This document provides a summary of SU's AI Position Statement along with practical examples illustrating good vs bad use of GenAI tools, such as ChatGPT and Copilot. The list of examples given in Sec. 6 is meant to guide the use of GenAI tools for generating text, code, summaries, or using AI for brainstorming or planning academic tasks.
