PhD Graduation

Your time to shine

Should you have completed the examination process, and be awaiting the arrangements for graduation, please receive our warmest congratulations on successfully completing your PhD.

Stellenbosch University (registrar's division) has scheduled the FMHS doctoral graduation ceremony for Thursday, 11 December 2025 (schedule TBC). Graduation will take place in the Coetzenburg Centre, situated between the Danie Craven Stadium, the Sports Science building and the Maties Gym in Stellenbosch (barring unforeseen circumstances).

The registrar's division takes full, central responsibility for this regulated event. We have been informed that the arrangements can only be confirmed upon formal approval by the highest university body, Senate. Until such time as you receive a formal notice via email (usually to your student email account), the arrangements are still being finalised. Meanwhile, the registrar's division has supplied this website as well as the following information:

  1. Graduation costs - there is no cost involved from the SU side

  2. Accommodation – each candidate is responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

  3. Visa letter - international graduates in need of an invitation letter to facilitate a visa application, may contact the graduation coordinator, Ms Demi Melton, at [email protected].

  4. Academic attire is available on campus to hire/purchase for all present and past graduands for photos and private events.

  6. Doctoral graduates may expect a formal invitation with their ticket shortly before graduation. If confirmed graduates have not received their ticket in advance, they should be able to collect the ticket from the information kiosk at the Coetzenburg Centre on graduation day. This ticket can be printed or saved on a cell phone and must be shown at the entrance.

  7. By law, there are limitations to the number of people allowed in the venue at one time. Doctoral graduates are usually permitted to invite up to four guests. Should a graduate not make use of all four guest tickets, these may not be transferred to a different graduate or other guests.
