Research and Internationalisation
Development and Support (RIDS)
Stellenbosch University will be Africa's leading research-intensive university, globally recognised as excellent, inclusive, and innovative, where we advance knowledge in service of society. We aim to attract outstanding students, employ talented staff, and provide an enabling environment; a place connected to the world, that contributes to the wellbeing of communities near and far.
The Tygerberg Doctoral Office powers PhD research in the Matie Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences - from proposal development through to graduation day. The FMHS counts among the top 175 medical and health sciences schools in the world, and the top four in Africa. Our campus is situated in the picturesque Tygerberg area of Cape Town, South Africa. The Tygerberg Doctoral Office fulfils the secretariate function of the FMHS Committee for Postgraduate Research; facilitates the SU Pre-Doctoral Short Course in Medicine and Health Sciences; administers the examination of full research (100%) masters theses as a key route into the PhD; and provides comprehensive support to all stakeholders in PhD studies, from prospective students, through supervisors, to programme leaders. Our PhD Support pages contain detailed information on the different steps of the doctoral journey. A brief overview of these resources is available for download in brochure format. The detailed regulations that apply to doctoral students are captured in the SU Yearbook (Part 1 - General) as well as the FMHS Faculty Yearbook (Part 12 of the SU Yearbook). Doctoral graduates are showcased at linktr.ee/tyg_phd.
