We accept Social, Environmental, and Governance responsibility

The Tygerberg Doctoral Office (TDO) is an integral part of Stellenbosch University’s research ecosystem, helping to create and sustain an enabling environment for world-class, inclusive research. We are committed to living and operationalising the University’s values of excellence, compassion, accountability, respect, and equity. Providing effective, professional support to all participants in doctoral studies is our foundational rationale, even as we collectively advance the work of researchers and the interests of our wider stakeholder community and society. As part of our embodiment of these values, we embrace social, environmental, and governance stewardship. This is expressed through three concrete commitments:

  1. We foster an inclusive environment. To promote belonging for all, we practice collegiality and cultivate mutually respectful and friendly professional relationships with one another, our divisional peers, and colleagues across Stellenbosch University.
  2. We champion full participation by persons living with a disability. We strive to provide fully accessible services and offerings and to continuously expand inclusion on our campus. We invite FMHS colleagues to visit our Annual Academic Day stand for disability-relevant information and encourage all SU colleagues to support SA Casual Day. We also help raise awareness of the commitments contained in the SU Disability Access Policy and the work of the SU Disability Office. To current and prospective SU community members living with a disability: we are learning, and we welcome your input on your specific needs and requests.
  3. We minimise our environmental footprint. We deliver approximately 95 % of our services paperlessly, reserving printing for occasions where this adds clear, well-considered value on site. This approach supports the SU sustainability goals and our Faculty’s ambition to achieve a zero-waste Tygerberg campus.
Values integration

Through these actions, we give practical expression to SU’s vision of excellence, inclusion, and innovation in service of society, and we embody the aspirational attributes of SU stakeholders, including all-round impact, agility and responsivity, collaboration, shared values, professionalism, systemic sustainability, strategic focus, and an entrepreneurial mindset. These commitments illustrate how shared responsibility and collective action can bring the University’s vision and mission to life.

Partner with us to advance inclusive excellence

Our commitment to social, environmental, and governance stewardship is strengthened by the partnership and generosity of those who share Stellenbosch University’s vision of excellence, inclusion, and innovation in service of society. Within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), there are several meaningful ways to support this vision; from advancing impactful research to promoting inclusive access and supporting student well-being.

A Worthy Legacy

✝️ Leave a lasting legacy by including the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in your will, which will help to promote life-changing research, healthcare, and health professions education well into the future.

✉ I would like to receive information about a possible donation to the FMHS in my will.
✉ I have included the FMHS in my will and would like to be included in the Heritage League.

Promoting Inclusive Access

🕊️ The FMHS Ithemba Bursary Fund, established in 2015, provides critical financial support to students who do not qualify for existing funding structures. Ithemba — meaning “hope” — honours the legacy of the late SU Rector, Prof Russel Botman, whose HOPE Project opened doors for those who might otherwise have been excluded. Contributing to this fund helps sustain that legacy and expand access to transformative education. Please download the donor's form and email the completed form to Candice Egan on [email protected].

Advancing Research Impact

🫁 A GivenGain crowdfunding campaign is raising funds to purchase an Olympus bronchoscope for paediatric use. This instrument will enhance early diagnosis and treatment for tuberculosis and malignancies in young patients and enable vital interventional procedures. Your contribution directly supports cutting-edge research and clinical innovation.

Supporting Student Well-being
