Centre for Evidence-based Health Care (CEBHC)
Preparing the next generation of industry experts
The Centre for evidence-based health care (CEBHC) is a centre in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Department of Global Health. It is a beacon on the African continent in advancing evidence-based health care at a local and increasingly through its collaborations on a more global scale. n a world where fact, fiction, myth, and misinformation increasingly blur – amplified by online fabrications – the Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care’s mission has become critically essential.
Evidence-based health care (EBHC) is a systematic approach to clinical problem-solving that integrates the best available research with clinical expertise and patient values. EBHC involves lifelong, self-directed learning, where patient care prompts the need for critical clinical information. As research evolves, healthcare professionals must stay current to provide effective care and discontinue practices shown to be harmful or ineffective.
Evidence-based healthcare involves five essential steps:
- ASK: first, converting information needs into answerable questions;
- ACCESS: second, finding the best evidence with which to answer the questions;
- APPRAISE: third, critically appraising the evidence for its validity and usefulness;
- APPLY: fourth, applying the results of the appraisal into clinical practice; and
- AUDIT: fifth, evaluating performance.
This resource is to give you some practical information to assist you in practicing EBHC. One general resource, the EBM toolkit (link - https://www.cebm.net/category… , includes useful information and resources related to all the key steps of EBHC. It includes critical appraisal guidelines for various study designs.
