Meet Annemarie Wust: #MyTygerMaties60

​As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is introducing 60 future healthcare professionals who are currently in their first year. Meet Annemarie Wust.

Annemarie Wust dreams of living in a countryside town one day where she’ll work as a doctor in the mornings, and as a coach for the school’s first hockey team in the afternoons.

Her love for this sport is apparent even from looking at her school resume, which indicates that she captained Belville’s Stellenberg High School’s first hockey team last year in addition to being the school’s head girl. Wust was also part of the Western Province hockey squad.

Now that she’s a first-year medical student a the Unviversity of Stellenbosch, she still enjoys playing.

It seems like Wust is good at striking a good balance between sports, academics and culture – at school she was also in the provincial debating team.She chose the medical profession because of her intrigue for the human body. “How the body is woven together and how each small thing in the body works together with others to allow us to function optimally, fascinates me,” she explains.More about Annemarie:

  • Who do you regard as successful, and why? “Mother Teresa. I think she knew what life was, through her wholehearted service to others.”
  • What motto do you live by? “But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.”
  • Worst habit? “I drink sugar in my coffee.”
  • Best habit? “I don’t drink sugar in my tea.”
  • Favourite movie character and why? “Captain Jack Sparrow [from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies]. Need I say more?”
