Preparing the next generation of industry experts

The Division of Emergency Medicine, which is housed in the Department of Family and Emergency Medicine at Stellenbosch University, is preparing the next generation of emergency care leaders and setting new benchmarks in clinical education and research. Our comprehensive programmes – undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses – equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage high-pressure medical situations. 

Our innovative mass casualty drills have been adopted as a regional emergency response model. Our research in emergency care protocols has been published in leading international journals. Our faculty, recognised experts in critical care and urban emergency planning, bring real-world insights into the classroom. We continue to drive transformative change in emergency medicine through these accomplishments, ensuring our graduates excel in diverse and challenging settings.

Our programmes

MBChB IV: Emergency Medicine Boot Camp

This programme module introduces fourth-year medical students to key principles of emergency medicine. The course combines theoretical learning with practical exercises, offering hands-on experience in pre-hospital emergency care, disaster medicine, aviation medicine and managing critically ill patients.

Postgraduate

MMed in Emergency Medicine

This clinical programme trains students to become emergency medicine specialists. It includes structured academic sessions, clinical practice and research. Graduates receive the MMed in Emergency Medicine and the FCEM(SA) qualification, enabling registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

PhD in Emergency Medicine

This is a research-based programme completed through a dissertation. Students contribute to advancing emergency medicine by conducting independent research under expert supervision.

Short Courses

Emergency Point-of-Care Ultrasound

This course is designed for healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses and pre-hospital personnel. No prior ultrasound training is required. The course includes online learning and a one-day practical session.

International Health Elective

The division offers elective emergency medicine and trauma placements for international undergraduate and postgraduate students.
