Inputs on transport landscape on campus are rewarded

Stellenbosch University approved its first mobility plan in 2010. The plan focused on encouraging other modes of transport than private transport, such as walking, cycling, carpooling and campus shuttle services. SU is currently in the process of reviewing and updating the plan within the context of the changes that have occurred in the transport landscape in recent years.

A core component of this update is to take human behaviour into account when plans are devised. To this end, a combination of an online questionnaire, travel log and smart phone app known as Tracklog was introduced in September 2015 to determine the transport behaviour of staff and students. How, for example, does transport link to their daily activities? And what determines the choice of transport everyone makes? The combination of data collection tools measured the elements of personal travel. These included personal travel costs, travel time and environmental costs (especially carbon emissions). Students and staff were also asked to share their experiences with transport bottlenecks on and around the University's campuses and, more specifically, how it affects their safety. Submission of the questionnaire entered participants into a lucky draw of three vouchers worth R3 000 each to spend at a well-known shopping centre. And if the travel log was completed and the app activated, participants stood a further chance to win two vouchers worth R2 500 each. The winners of the vouchers were from left to right Prof GA Schoombee (Stellenbosch, Department of Economics); Dr I Rootman-Le Grange (Stellenbosch, Department of Natural Sciences); Ms CN Snyman (Stellenbosch, International Office); Mrs K Nel Van Zyl (Tygerberg, Medical Microbiology). Absent: Mr M Locklyer (Tygerberg, Medicine and Health Sciences). Congratulations to the winners! The Transportation Task Team would like to thank all the participants for their time and effort. Much appreciation also goes to the Logistics Department and their support team who designed the various data collection tools with such expertise and managed the process! It was truly teamwork of the highest quality.
