At the Department of Family and Emergency Medicine at Stellenbosch University, we focus on advancing health through transformative education, innovative research, and meaningful community service.

Our distinctive programmes equip healthcare professionals with the comprehensive skillset needed to deliver effective primary care wherever their career might take them. 
 

The Department of Family and Emergency Medicine consists of the Divisions of Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine and Primary Care. Our objective is to promote the primary health care approach in teaching and learning, research, as well as clinical services and social impact of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Academics in Family and Emergency Medicine lecture to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences offers several postgraduate programmes in Family and Emergency Medicine.

Undergraduate Programmes

Medical students of the MBChB programme engage in longitudinal primary healthcare exposure, focusing on family and emergency medicine

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

A non-clinical degree focusing on leadership and scholarship in family medicine.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Research-focused programme for advanced scholarship in family and emergency medicine.

Master of Medicine (MMed)

This programme trains specialist family physicians across five training complexes in the Western Cape.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)

A clinical programme enhancing skills for primary care practitioners.
