  • Postgraduate research workshop: Postgraduate students completed a mandatory research course from 3-6 February.

The Department of Social Work vis-à-vis Stellenbosch University’s (SU) long term and strategic priorities aspires to a vibrant research culture where our postgraduate students confront local and global challenges with bold, forward-thinking solutions. Consequently, all new postgraduate students are obliged to complete a research course. The purpose of the research course is to deepen students’ understanding of social work research theories and methods, to develop the skills required for the execution of a postgraduate research project, and to foster a constructive and scholarly disposition towards advanced social work research. The course is grounded in the postgraduate research school of thought of the Department of Social Work at Stellenbosch University and aims to prepare students for rigorous, ethically responsible, and theoretically informed research practice.

Prof. Engelbrecht facilitated the intensive research course

For over 10 years now, Prof. Engelbrecht, the postgraduate coordinator has  facilitated the intensive research course with childlike enthusiasm. This year was no different. From exploring social work methodologies to grappling with real-world interventions, there was palpable and active engagement from students throughout the duration of the course. But it’s not just theory, students received orientation about SU’s elite resources, including the accalimed Writing Lab and the world class  SU Library.

"This course is not just preparation - it's ignition. Our students are ready to confront social issues with fearless innovation one bold idea at time”, says Prof. Engelbrecht.

The Department of Social Work wishes 2026 postgraduate students all the best with their respective research projects.
