Governor Lesetja Kganyago

Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, was unanimously elected to the office of Chancellor of Stellenbosch University on 24 January 2025. Governor Kganyago is the 16th Chancellor of SU.​

The Chancellor

The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University and is elected, in accordance with the Statute of the University, by an electoral college consisting of the members of Council, the members of the Executive Committee of the Senate and the President and Vice-President of the Convocation. The Chancellor awards, among others, degrees in the name of the University at graduation ceremonies and performs other ceremonial duties. Governor Lesetja Kganyago was installed on Friday 20 June 2025.

About Lesetja Kganyago

Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, was unanimously elected to the office of Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU) on 24 January 2025. Governor Kganyago is the 16th Chancellor of SU.​

Governor Kganyago received an honorary doctorate​​ (Doctor of Commerce (DCom) honoris causa) from SU in 2018 and is viewed as one of the finest public-policy minds in the country. In December 2020, Nelson Mandela University also conferred upon him an honorary Doctorate of Commerce. 

​He holds a Master of Science degree in development economics from London University (School of Oriental and African Studies) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting and economics from the University of South Africa.
