Statutory bodies

Stellenbosch University’s governance is firmly rooted in a system of statutory bodies established in accordance with the Higher Education Act and the University’s Statute. These bodies are essential to the University’s integrity, accountability and effective functioning. They ensure that our University’s academic and operational activities are conducted transparently and in line with national policy, institutional values, and the interests of all stakeholders. Each statutory body has a unique composition and set of responsibilities, working together to guide our University’s strategic direction and uphold its reputation for excellence.

Each statutory body has a unique composition and set of responsibilities, working together to guide our University’s strategic direction and uphold its reputation for excellence.

The Senate is the chief academic authority of our University. Its primary function is to oversee all academic matters, including teaching, learning, research, and academic standards. The Senate is made up of the Rector (as chair), Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Deans, academic heads of departments, representatives of academic staff and student representatives. The Senate develops and reviews academic policies, approves new qualifications and programmes, and ensures the quality and integrity of our University’s academic offerings.

The Institutional Forum is a consultative body that promotes dialogue and inclusivity across the University community. Its main role is to advise the Council on issues related to transformation, equity, and social justice on campus. The Forum’s membership includes representatives from management, academic and professional staff, students and trade unions. It plays a vital role in fostering a culture of participation and ensuring that diverse voices are heard in institutional decision-making, particularly on matters of transformation and policy development.

The Convocation consists of all graduates of Stellenbosch University, as well as current and retired academic staff. Its primary function is to maintain a strong relationship between the University and its alumni community. The Convocation elects representatives to the Council and other bodies and provides input on key issues affecting the University’s future. Through its activities, the Convocation helps to uphold the traditions, values, and reputation of Stellenbosch University.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is the official voice of the student body at Stellenbosch University. Its main responsibility is to represent student interests in governance structures, including the Council and Senate. The SRC is elected annually by the students and comprises representatives from various faculties and interest groups. The SRC advocates for student needs, participates in policy discussions, and helps to shape a vibrant, inclusive campus environment.
