Stellenbosch University Museum

The Stellenbosch University Museum is located at 52 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch, within the heart of our University's main campus. Housed in a historic building constructed in 1907 as Bloemhof Meisieskool (Bloemhof Girls' School), the structure was designed by architect Folkert Wilko Hesse in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style – a rare architectural choice in South Africa. The building's distinctive red brickwork and polychromatic detailing highlight its unique design. In 1986, Stellenbosch University acquired the property, and following renovations supported by Sasol, it was officially opened as the University Museum on 3 October 1991. Today, the Museum boasts an extensive collection of over 6 000 traditional African art pieces, including masks, sculptures and textiles, making it one of the largest collections of its kind in South Africa. Additionally, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programmes and cultural events, serving as a vibrant cultural hub for both our University community and the public.
