Open Days
Annual Physics Open Day for learners and the public - 17 July 2026
Discover the Universe at the Physics Department's Open Day! Join us in the Merensky Building to view exciting research - from fundamental particles to the vast structure of the Universe. All are welcome - learners, parents, undergraduate students and the general public.
Speakers from all of our research focus areas — Astronomy and Astrophysics, Theoretical Physics, Laser Physics, and Nuclear Physics — will share insights into their respective fields, study options and current research. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore interactive physics demonstrations and take part in guided tours of our laboratories. The researchers and students leading the laboratory showcase and guided tours will be available during the refreshments session to answer questions and chat about their work, studying physics, and research opportunities within the department.
The Faculty of Science's student and academic affairs coordinator will provide information on enrolment into the physics programme and answer questions about studying physics at university level.
Quicket tickets will go live on 1 June 2026.
Attention undergraduate students: Explore postgraduate options in Physics - 19 August 2026
Are you considering postgraduate studies in physics? Get a taste of the postgraduate environment and the research opportunities that await you. This event will offer you more than the brochure – you can also ask the important (and unimportant) questions and meet the people behind the research.
Current postgraduate students will talk about the most common challenges and the uncertainties that accompany the transition from an undergraduate to a postgraduate student.
Come and discover the scientific questions that are the driving force behind the department’s research. Academic staff and researchers will speak on their current research. You will get first-hand information about projects that you can pursue for your postgraduate studies.
And after all the discussions, there is time for networking and socializing while enjoying light refreshments. Meet potential supervisors and future fellow students and find out where your interests and academic curiosity will best fit.
